The Paper Ceiling

Be Extraordinary. No Paper Required.

I went to the Phoenix IT Summit yesterday that was sponsored by Fusion Storm and was talking to someone that told me you can classes from MIT online for free! I was blown away. From the site:

"MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) is a web-based publication of virtually all MIT course content. OCW is open and available to the world and is a permanent MIT activity."

It is amazing to me that you can go online now and take a Theoretical Physics, Mathematics and Philosophy courses from MIT for free. The only investment you need, which is always the hardest, is devoting the time.

The down economy has not had much of an effect on IT security and if you have some l33t hax0r skills and are a CISSP with a little experience you should have no problem getting a raise from your current (or a new) employer. There a lot of companies out there providing the services, but the one that impressed me the most was one of the presenters that was the president of Anitian. The message was you have to protect against the simple but boring 1/5 type of everyday threats (i.e. patching, AV, etc) as opposed to the 1/88,000 threats (terrorism, script kiddies, etc.) Not that the 1/88,000 does not exist, but if you are a small company hackers in China are not going to be that likely to target you when compared to a government or Aerospace company.

Also, if you have experience as what is commonly referred to in technical sales as an SE (Solution Engineer, Sales Engineer) there are a lot amount of opportunities, especially in IT Security, SAN, enterprise storage and networking.

Check the forums for posts and links to companies that are hiring.

Take care and keep learning!
